Spring Equinox: Embracing Renewal
The Vision Behind Our Seasonal Gathering
Passcode: ?5$aqdfQ
As the earth awakens and day and night find perfect balance, communities around the world have historically marked the Spring Equinox as a powerful time of transition and renewal. Yesterday's "Spring Equinox: Embracing Renewal" workshop was born from a desire to honor this seasonal shift through a lens that centers BIPOC ancestral wisdom, herbal traditions, and community connection.
This event was created with a clear intention: to provide a sacred space where participants could reconnect with seasonal living practices rooted in traditional knowledge. In our fast-paced, often disconnected modern world, there's a growing hunger for rituals and practices that help us align with natural cycles and ancestral wisdom.
The workshop was specifically designed to promote seasonal, community-based living through educational experiences that honor the Spring Equinox's significance across various cultural traditions. By focusing on BIPOC-centered rituals and herbal knowledge, the event aimed to create visibility and space for wisdom traditions that have historically been marginalized or appropriated.
Honoring Tradition Through a Contemporary Lens
Facilitator tahnee simone brings a unique perspective as a fat, Black, working-class, non-binary, queer, neurodivergent, chronically ill, first-generation Jamaican descendant, and native Philadelphian. Their work as a pagan spiritual worker, visual and performance artist, writer, educator, organizer, and culture keeper deeply informs their approach to seasonal ceremonies.
Since founding SacredSkin Craftworks + Spiritual Arts in 2014, tahnee has created intentionally crafted skincare, herbal preparations, and ritual support items while offering community-focused spiritual coaching through a healing justice framework. As the inaugural Community Director of Black.Bird.Rising, a wellness retreat space centering Black LGBTQIA+ people and their accomplices, tahnee's work consistently emphasizes the importance of reclaiming traditional practices as tools for both personal and collective healing.
Seasonal Rituals as Resistance and Reclamation
The Spring Equinox workshop was conceived as more than just a wellness event—it represents part of a larger movement to reclaim and revitalize traditions that connect us to the earth and to each other. By focusing on seasonal herbalism, rituals, and wellness practices, the gathering invited participants to see these traditions not as relics of the past, but as living practices that continue to offer wisdom and healing.
Spring herbs like nettle, dandelion, and red clover were highlighted for their traditional roles in supporting the body's natural detoxification processes during this seasonal transition. These plants, emerging just as the earth reawakens, have been used for generations across various cultures to prepare the body for the increased energy and activity of spring.
A Framework for Seasonal Living
The workshop was structured to provide both philosophical understanding and practical tools for embracing the equinox energy. Participants were invited to learn about:
Seasonal Rituals: Practices that help harmonize with nature's rhythms and foster personal growth
Health and Wellness Tips: Methods to support the body's natural processes during seasonal transitions
Herbal Allies: Traditional plant remedies that align with spring's energy of renewal
Ancestral Connections: Ways to honor cultural traditions while adapting them for contemporary life
By creating space for these conversations and practices, the event aimed to help participants develop a more intimate relationship with the turning of the seasons and the wisdom embedded in ancestral traditions.
Building Community Through Shared Practice
Perhaps most importantly, this gathering was created to foster community connection. In a world where many feel isolated from both nature and meaningful human relationships, coming together to mark seasonal transitions offers a powerful antidote to disconnection.
The workshop represented an opportunity for BIPOC herbalists, healers, and community members to connect and celebrate ancestral wisdom in a supportive environment. By sharing knowledge, stories, and interactive experiences, the event sought to weave a tapestry of collective wisdom that strengthens community bonds.
As we move forward into the bright energy of spring, events like this remind us that seasonal living isn't merely a personal wellness practice—it's a radical act of remembering our place within natural cycles and reclaiming traditions that have sustained communities for generations.
This Spring Equinox gathering represents part of an ongoing commitment to honor seasonal transitions through community-centered practices. To learn more about future events or tahnee nimone's work, visit SacredSkin Craftworks + Spiritual Arts or connect with Black.Bird.Rising.
